10.PUB QUIZ- without drinks!!! =((

We had a quiz on last tuesday which was called "pub quiz". Sonja explained this inordinary name for the quiz that in England, people do this quiz an a pub!!! With the effects of alcohol, they have fun with the question which are mainly about general knowledge. What we did was nothing but "fun" comparing to the real pub quiz=)) Sonja asked questions about our lectures like "Who wrote "And of clay are we created?" or "How many blogs should you write until the ned of the semester?" etc. and we all answered these questions as a group, ÇARŞI; because the prize was enormous!!! The grades will be one step higher of the winner team! So we worked hard- but not hard enough i guess..- and we tried all the best we can, but UNFORTUNATELY we lose it... ="((


As a member of my group, i say "congragulations!!" to all my rival team members:D And if this quiz ever happens AGAİN we will beat you up!!! =P

9.domination of WOMEN

In this text the author mentions that men "marked" women in so many ways.She used these examples;
-In humans there are 2 different chromosomes X and Y.Where a baby boy cannot live without the X chromosome, but a baby girl can survive with the chromosomes of XO which is a genetic disorder.So men need a "marked" gene to live!!
-We call a male from the age 1 till his death "Mr." but in females its different; we call miss(ms.) to the girls and madame(mrs.) to the women. [notice how we write mrs. ...]

We can combine this text with the film "killing us softly". The author of the film emphasized that women had been using for the pleasures of men.They use us in media, fashion, and in beauty most commonly.For example a woman with a nice body can expose herself in a commercial and can gain a lot of money.But are we sure that we wanna be a billionerre in this way?? For me its ridicilous to expose by body for the pleasure of men or help a product to make it sell more.

We can see examples of "marking" in the text of a woman on a roof.In there, the woman in red bikini rejects to hide away from those 3man who were peeping at her because she was "half naked." and insisted in avoiding them.For those men she was a precious material which could sunbathe their pleasures and eyes.

In conclusion, there are mentalities to use woman as a pleasure material for men but we -as strong, independent womans- should fight back, resist and finally dominate ourselves!!!
Because a woman is precious more than the most beautiful diamond in the world...

8.Presantation that didn't fulfill the expectations...

We were going to presantate "the woman on a roof" text by dorris Lessing today, on thursday on the tenth of december.We thought we were so ready that our slide show was nearly perfect, so did what was written in the show as information.While we were presanting, Sonja-our lovely teacher =) - caused us to sweat with her tough questions about the connections between our text and the others. She asked about the analysis of the text and of course in connection with the relation of this text to the others - i assumed that our text is the most significant one among the others and the most symbolic one.-
She didn't like or didn't see enough our analysis and our deductions of the text so she commented us to work hardly on the next time which is going to be V for Vendetta.

I was excited because my parts were long and more detailed.Historical context was in my part and i thought that i have searched it enough but she said that it was nothing but enough! So i was a little disappointed but understood where i did wrong.

Our friends said that we have no outline, no proper references.Long sentences in the slide bored the audience.they also added that we repeated the summary twice or more! :D

Sonja asked these questions for suggestition;
-What do the characters represent?
-Why did she use this language?
-What is the significance of early 1960s London?
-what about these symbols?
the roof
the weather
the bikini
the color red


So in our real presantation we will pay a special attention to those points and will present you the perfect presantation!!!

7.Tv or Cause of bad habits?? (!)

The author of the text "TV: the plug-in drug" mentions that TV is the bad seed of everything.It affects children, married couples, social communicatition in bad ways.The serious damage of TV is mostly to a person.When a person watches long hours of TV, the communication skills of that person is damaged.
These are her ideas but i dont agree with her.I think TV is a good entertainment instrument when people have free time and have nothing to do.Reading books and communicating are ofcourse other options, but i think sometimes people just wanna sit and do nothing! At those times TV becomes our best friend.You dont have to make an effort to watch it and it entertains you.It gives you joy, it provides you comfort and it expects nothing! On this big universe, is there anything else that gives you that much pleasure and still wants nothing???

On the other hand, its true that in Turkey, people dont know how to watch it.They sat infront of it for hours and they enjoy killing their time which is sooo precious...

The publishers and TV channel managers know how addicted the public of Turkey to the TV, so they extend a 70-90 minutes film or a show to 130-150 minutes with summaries of the previous episodes and commercials so that they earn MUCH MORE MONEY!!!
I'm against this because they put the public like they are a bunch of idiots.So i save the turkish soaps -thanks to digiturk plus =) - and watch them with fastforwarding the commercials =)

The presantation group was well organized and dominant to the topic and the story.They developed a good thesis.At the end of their presantation, they mentioned their own opinions and it was nice to hear them.

6.Being a man...

In the story we see an Afro-American "black" teenager called Dave; who was triying to get some respect.He thougt that if he would have a gun, everybody -both blacks and whites- would show respect to him and that gun would make him "a real man".In the story the main idea is the inequilities between the whites and blacks.


Throughout the story, he got some money from his mom and bought a gun.While he was playing with that gun on the open field, Jenny - the mule- was shot and died.The owner of he mule came ,and the others too, and they laughed all togetherly at him because of this funny event.So instead of getting respect, he got teased.


There are lots of ideas of racism, inequility in the text.The writer is also an afro-american, so these racism and inequilities arent distal to him.

Our friends who presantate this text wasnt fully prevail to the story.There are symbols like gun,mule -i think it's important too for having a name like Jenny- and "being a man"; the dialogues were written in afro-american style and they didnt mention these.Although there were some problems, it was nice to hear them !!!

5. toughness and violence

Mascular, strong, independent, powerful, respected, violent, tough! These are some adjectives that describes "men" from the eyes of men.Why do men try to look bigger and violent? The answer is simple: it is emposed in media! We can see lots of examples for this:
Female bodies were projected as skinny and well-developed since the fashion become.In old times females were a bit more fat and not so skinny; as the technology developed, the expantations of men from women grew bigger so women meet their expectations to survive in fashion and beauty etc. Now models are too skinny - and anorecsic and sick- and they think its the new standart of beauty!
On the other hand while women get thinner and thinner males get bigger and mascular. Not only in real life but toys like action man etc perform the new trend of "masculinity".

All of these examples show us that media emposes some "themes" during the time.What appears in the media not always the truth and the news arent always reliable.For example because media emposes violence as a man thing and it seems normal for a man to make violence so when a women do violence it hits the news as it is something very extraordinary.

To sum up, media interferes a lot to form these themes and affect people, mostly young males who sees TV as a school.

4.Male or female??

There are 2 genders for the beginning of the world- boys and girls. Males have masculine characteristics where as females have feminine.As the cultures developed different tendencies occur.Gays have a bigger part of feminity in them rather than normal men so their behaviour resemble like woman.People can't take it kindly gays and their behaviours that they push gays away from the society, they ignored them-still are- and so gays keep oneselfs to oneselfs and they created their own societies - they created their own bars, festivals, meetings etc. Lesbians on the other hand have both masculine and feminine parts in them.

With the creations of gay things lesbians occur later.They immediately participate gay society so the public named both for lesbians and gays as a full name of -gay! In gays relationships one person of the couple becomes a "man" and the other a "woman". This stratification is only to hoodwink the publis's eye.In cultures there must be woman-man figures in the soicety to prevent the uproar.So because of this public suppression gays stratify themselves.

Holland is the only country that stands for the rights of gays.Marriage, child adoption and other things are legal in there so gays prefer to live in Amsterdam.

I think its wrong to define genders straightly.Some of us may be afraid of the other sex in us.Men often suppresse the feminine parts in them and do everything to put mask of a macho man.Women are too not always comfortable of their masculine parts.They try to hide this to show the outside world that they aren't vulnurable or fragile.

All of these hidings are because this world is the world of the tough,the powerful, the one who could bare every difficulty; but none of these plans can help the person to hide what he/she really is.

But many psychogologists believe that a person is a complex of masculine and feminine parts.So without limiting genders i think we should look this conception of gender as a whole.By this we can be "complete".

3. The woman on the roof

The writer, wrote an unusual story which covers recent problems nowadays too; peeping at women.In the story there are 3 man, workers who works on the roofs or in the basement.When they are fixing the roof, the neighbor woman, starts to sunbathe on her roof.All 3 of man; Harry the older one, Stanley newly married but handsome one, and Tom, who is only 17 ; stare at her like they haven't seen a "half naked woman" (thats what they told her because she wears a red bikini) before.

She is avare of their glances but she ignores them.Although the sun is burning they prefer to work on the roof just to see her.

Stanley nicknamed her as Lady Godiva because she's "naked". Among all 3 of them, Tom peep her the most.-Here the writer refers Tom as "Peeping Tom" - and due to his youth he become obsessed with her.Harry asks their foreman to work at another time -he excused the sun- bacause he was afraid that things would get bigger.

When they decide to leave the roof Tom went to her and tried to talk her. But of course she ignored him, saying if he wanted to see women in bikini why doesn't he go to Lido??

With this story we understand that men can't stand to see a naked woman, and that women could protect themselves.

2. APA format

To use in our essays, out of lots of formatting tecniques, we studied APA. In APA, the main points are in-text citations and list of references.

There are 3 ways of gathering information from our sources.First one is using quotations when we want to take to the whole sentence or phrase from the author's text.In this method both in-text citation and list of references are needed.

The other way is phraphrasing.It means to re-write the sentence with your own words.We must use both of the tecniques in this method too.

The last one is summarising, which means shortening and phraprasing the original text.Again in this , we must use both of tecniques.

An example for in-text citations;
Our voyeuristic demand seems to be increasing; we hardy pay attention anymore to single murders. (Rushdie, 2001)

An example for list of references;
Tack, S. (2009) Week 3: Proper use of source material. ENG 101 The Indıvıdual, Society and Change. Student sentence #4.

In order to avoid plaigirism and to give credit the author, we must do both of the tecniques.It also helps the reader to find more information about the text if they wanted.

1.A different perspective to "reality"

Allende approaches to the topic "reality" from a different angle: with a story! "And of clay are we created" is about a reporter who tries to help a little girl, Azucena.As we all know from the title of the story, Azucena was under the mud which was caused by a volcana eruption.Rolf Carle, the reporter, tried everything to help her but she was stuck underneath the mud.For 3 days she suffered, all the media was there but not the pump which could really helped her.The narrator, Carle's girlfriend tried to get some help there but no one was helpful.Her sufferings was on TV for 3 days!


There comes the "reality" part.People like to watch real things on TV but that shouldn't be some little girl's suffers...I think this story is mainly written for the idea of "How far can the reality go?" and with this story we learn what Allende thinks.I agree to her that sometimes on TV, there are programs which ovestep the limits.

I like the story and I suggest everyone to read it.
